A Learned Judge.—A baillie of Glasgow was noted for the simplicity of his manners on the bench. A youth was charged before him with abstracting a handkerchief from a gentleman's pocket. The indictment J?eing read, the bailie, addressing the prisoner-, remarked, "I hae nae doot ye did the deed, for I had a handkerchief ta'en oot o' my am pouch this vera week." The same magisterial logician was on another occasion seated on the bench, when a case of serious assault was brought forward by the public prosecutor. Struck by the powerful phraseology of the indictment, the baillie proceeded to say, " For this malicious crime ye are fined halfa-guinea." The assessor remarked that the case had not yet been proven. " Then," said the magistrate, " we'll just mak' the fine five : shillings." An Intention Defeated.—An accomplished and charming young lady was married by her parents to an old man, who was as disagreeable as he was rich. Grief and melancholy soon brought her to the edge of the grave. As she lay at the point of death, she resolved to leave all her little savings, amounting to about £1000, to a young friend, in order, as she said in her will, that the latter, more fortunate then herself, might be able to marry the man of her choice. And what did the young legatee do but, after a decent interval, marry the old Widower! —Once a Week.
