TIMARU.
Thursday.
Archdeacon Harper writes to the Herald, exonerating the Rev. Mr Gillies from blame in the matter of Fulton's burial. The Archdeacon says he had attended the deceased during his illness, and after his death he made all the arrangements for the funeral. The Wanaka arrived this morning. There are great complaints among 1 the shipmasters of delays in landing and shipping cargo. The French barque , Nbone has been here five weeks, and is not nearly ready yet. This day. A frightful accident happened at the firing of a royal salute yesterday. A gunner named Wallis, Timaru artillery, loaded the guv, and when the-order to fire was given, he forgot he had loaded and made as if to load it again. The firing gunner did not see him, and pulled the lanyard. The gun was fired and blew Wallis's arm off, severely injuring the right side of his head as .well. He now lies in the hospital, with little hope of his recovery. Later. . . Wallis, the artillery man who was wounded yesterday at Timaru, died this , morning. Lrx ;nquest will be held this afternoon.
