WINDSOR CASTLE.
Redman and party, who are now work- * ing this claim, situate at Shellback, com* pleted a crashing at the Kuranui battery sesterday for the poor return of 15dwts. 'he parcel treated amounted to two tons. .-. * ■ ; QUEEN OF THE if AY. I In company 1 with the manager I paid a. visit to the mine to-day.^ <Wenrat went down to the bottom leyel, md I mw that a good strong pent house had been erected over the bottom of the shaft since my last visit, and that'the sinking of the shaft had been started.' A windlass wairto-be pat •up to-day and the further sinking proceeded with. The ground is very hard, and it will take some time to get it down. I first proceeded to the drive on the foot* wall lode, towards the Queen of the Thames section of the'company's ground, and found that some eight or ten feet of ' the lode had been stripped,' while the last place where the reef was broken showed gold in the face. There is a great improvement in the reef,, and during the driving of the last few feet it has
been discovered that the hanging-wall, has become as well defined like 1 the foot -. wall. Formerly the mullock ends' projected into the side of the lode, and when clearing the wall a considerable quantity of quartz was also taken down. From the appearance of the hanging-wall it seems very likely that the next break down will show that the lode has greatly increased in size. Up in the stopes the lode is looking well, and though it shows as much gold it has not such a solid appearance as down in the drive. The present size of the reef averages from 10 inches to on& foot throughout. lln the hanging • wall reef there are some good colors of gold, and there ia copper, antimony, Ac; in abundance, which are generally accepted as being concomitants of the precious metal. la the face of the south-easterly drive the reef is of good size and looks well. The manager has started a rise frOiti the back
of the low level, and the quartz taken out is evidently of good quality.' The' sepa* rate parcel from this reef now amounts to about 15 or 20 tons, and will be crushed shortly at Bull's.battery, doubtless with a satisfactory' result^ It is intended-to extend the*workings, of the low level into'the Queep ;of Thames section, and as this has never Been done before in any of the other, workings, that section of the mine is comparatively a terra incognita. In the cross cut from the botiom level the work of driving is being pushed ahead through hard country, and the manager has started to drive both ways on the small leader cut some time' ago in the cross-cut.
