PIAKO.
In company with Mr Richards and Mr W. Howe I visited this mine to-day. We first went to the Queen of Beauty end, and there the reef has greatly improved, and appears to be improving as driving proceeds. To-day a shot was' fired in what was supposed' to be a small leader going off from the hanging wall of the main lode. The shot, however, showed that it was only a small stringer con* nected with the reef, which, however, contained gold, and some .30 or 401bs of golden stones were obtained. The manager informed me that gold had been v seen from the face for 17-, feet along the hang-ing-wall of the reef, and,' indeed, it was risible in several places there'and also in the face. Mr Bowe expressed himself pleased with the show, and said he expected •* they would soon get: the Queen of Beauty shot of gold. In the stopes the appearance of the reef is good throughout, but it appears prettycertain that the richest part, of the reef is below, and not above. In the big face the drive has been extended a considerable distance, and the reef continues to look' well, but there is nothing particular to report in connection with this part of the mine. Mr Small, the manager of tho company's battery, informed me that there is nothing particular to report, and there does not appear to be any change in the. crushing which is looking well. Betorting will take place on Saturday or Monday. Apropos of the battery it does seem rather strange that with the large resources of the mine it is only possible to keep 30 head of stampersgoing, when a- mine like the Queen-of Beauty for instance is able easily jto keep going a similar number of stampers.
