THE WEEK.

The events of the past week's mining ! have been treated pretty fully day by day, and they have not been of a character sufficiently important to require comment or recapitulation afc any length. The Moanntairi can scarcely be said to look as well as it did last week, a " horse" having made its appearance in the winze on No. 9 reef. Golden stone has been broken out, and picked stone for treatment in the single stamper, but it has not materially augmented the fortnightly yield to hand to-day. The various fealures met with in developing the mine have been made public in ■ the extremely laconic telegrams of the mine manager. In the WaioKaraka, while the Queen of May and Queen of Beauty show signs of gradual improvement in the quality of their quartz, and a prospect of soon paying further dividends, the City of London has had to resort to making a call to carry on the present progressive works in; the mine. The Pialto has improved, the crushing showing up better this week in production of amalgam, while the enormous reef shows gold frequently, although nothing remarkably rich. The project for extending the Thames Water Race: and rendering the water available as a motive power to drive the large batteries has advanced a stage. The scheme is favorably entertained by the Hon. the Attorney-General, and plans for the work are to be prepared. Should the Government accede to the request of the County authorities and extend the means of supply as desired, the water can be used in several ways where staam has now to beresorted to at a great expense. The extension of the water supply and the completion of the | Waiotahi road extension ara works the completion of which is looked forward to with some interest, as being calculated to give considerable impetus to mining in this district; There is nothing very startling from up country since publication of last reports, The gold returns for the week are pretty good, this being the, day on which some of the largest producers clean up.
