ALIENATION OF GOLDFIELDS LANDS.

(To the Editor of the'EveriiDg.Star.) Sir,—We read with pleasure the letter of an agriculturist in one of your issues of last.week, making enquiry as to the truth of a recent purchase of land by thenow celebrated aud renowned MrVesey' Stewart, situated within the boundaries of the goldfields. Such, sir,. I am informed on the best authority;, is quite correct; 1 viz., that'Mr Stewart has erilered. into an' agreement to purchase from a section of the Ngatbkoe tribe residing at Waihi, near Kati Enti, 7000 acres at five shillings per acre. This land 'joins oa to the boundary, line of .Tauranga ; which has been recently allotted by the Lands Board Commissioners of-Auckland forMr Stewards new scheme of. emigration, but the land which he is nowv. arranging to purchase is the block: on which he purposes locating the German immigrants shortly-expected to arrive from Melbourne. Being a near to this proposed settlement, I am also anxious to be informed as to the legality ■■of this' t-ransaetiob, as I should like' very much ■ to have a similar chance of obtainihg f'land3 atsuoh a reasonable pric>y as I am now engaged improving my agricultural lease, and paying five shillings, an ;JEicre J^r .^nntcth. The . settlers all around .me'; feel very indignant at this priTitege being extended toa land speculator: who has no-ipterest whatever in the colony, whil&t we " old settlers," who have fought the battles of civilisation in this district in, all its struggles and adversities are to be treated in this serrile manner, and.told pfflKfly- bj the authorities that if bur rents are not paid to the day, that, we shall be driven away and all "our impi'ovements forfeited. ' We shall be glad to hear this subject thoroughly investigated, and the whole •particulars, brought .to light.-:—. ■ I am, &c, ■.' '',':,';.:. -.. ■'• •' „.■- .• ■. -■ A Waitekatjei Sbttleb. r
