WELLINGTON.
Saturday.
In a bankruptcy case this morning the Chief Justice gave rather an important decision. It appears that ore Poll commenced an action against the debtor for damages for injuries through the debtor's negligence, and in January last had a verdict given in his favor for £270. Defendant . subsequently obtained, a rule nisi for n, new trial, which rule wag no £ discharged till a few days after the data of filing of a deed of arrangement between defendant and hiscredifebrs. There had been no entry for signing of judgment prior to the date of the deed, and there has been none since. Poll attacked the deed of arrangement. The question was whether he had a locus standi to object. The Court ruled that a claimin respect of a judgment was not a "debt contracted," unless there had been judgment prior to the deed; because a verdict without judgment did not create a-liability to a demand. On a subsidiary question, the Chief Justice said he was inclined to think it is necessary for creditors to prove before they can vote at an arrangement meeting. ;
The Governor is expected to visit Canterbury in about a fortnight. He will be invited to visit and open the new Canterbury College building and new Museum building. In connection with the latter an.exhibition of works of art and virtue* extending over eight days, is to be held.
