1 : The Otago Guardian of a recent date says : —That there is a.good deal of distress prevailing among the poorer classes was made painfully evident by an incident that Occurred yesterday. A strong ablebodied man, dressed in laboring clothes, presented himself at, the Police Station/ ,He stated that;one of his children had just died, and a second was at the-point of death ; that he was out of employment, and that he had no means whatever to pay..for their'burial. He was referred to the Commissioner of Police, but nothing could b,e done, as since the abolition of the Provincial liovernment there was no provision to meet such cases. The man, it may be stated, bore the frank, honest ap- ; pearance of one who was willing and ready to work; but he, declared that he had been starching in yam , for employment. : Messrs Mpllison and Hislop were interviewed in succession, but they could do nothing. The Mev. L. Mackie was then applied to, and hearing the nature of the case, he addressed a note to the City Coroner, Dr Hocken. That gentleman, after some time, found that he waspermittcd to act in such cases, and he gave the necessary instructions to liave the child buried. Such an incident as this provel? that there is more destitution at the present time among a section of tho labouring classes than some who profess to be well informed on such subjects would readily believe.
