Waitekauri Retorting.
Disastrous Firs at Faeroa.
Paeboa, 8.30 a.m.
The Waitekauri cleaning up and retorting took place yesterday for the satisfactory yield of 7220zs retorted gold, making a total of 13680zs for the month's crushing. The last fortnight's return is considerably better than the first, as during the last week not more than 25 head were actually at work, as the water was very light. The mine is looking first-class> and it is confidently expected the coming month's crushing will far surpass the one just finished".
A disastrous fire took place here at daylight this morning by which ; Mrs Hurley and family have lost everything they were possessed of. The fire is supposed to have originated in the wooden chimney. The inmates of the house had a very narrow escape, just having time to rush out of the burning building, not saving a single thing but their nightdresses.
