AN IMPORTANT QUESTION.
(To the Editor of the Evening Star.) Sib,—-I am, with others similarly situated, desirous to know whether it is legal or just that a speculator shouldbe permitted to deal with Natives professing to have claims upon land within the Goldfield boundaries? My reason for asking you the question is, that Mr Geo. Vesey Stewart, of Katikati, is at this very moment negotiating the purchase of a piece of' land containing some thousands of acres, not very far distant from some of our agricultural settlers who have taken leases from the Government and are spending their all in improving their lands, paying also five shillings an acre per annum, whereas Mr Stewart is permitted to purchase the very Eick of the land for the nominal sum of re shillings an acre. I am credibly informed that a surveyor left here yesterday to layoff the block.—l am, &c, ■■■■■■•' An Agriculturist. [We cannot imagine the Government countenancing any such negotiation. We shall make enquiries.—Ed.]
