INVERCARGILL.

This day.

The Governor arrived at the railway station here yesterday evening and was received by the Mayor and Corporation, who presented an address of welcome. In replying, His Excellency said:—" I am most sensibly impressed with the reception you have given me, as representing Her Majesty, on this my first visit to Invercargill. I have not yet had time to become familiarised with the resources and characteristics of your district, but after

seeing the splendid agricultural and pastoral country through which I have passed to-day, I have no doubt that your progress in all, that makes a people great and prosperous will be realised, and that with sotf and climate such as you possess, you will have to blame yourselves if success does not crown your efforts. Insufficiency of population appears to be your only want, but as I look round I see evidences that you have within yourselves powers which will materially assist in supplying youv deficiency in this respect. lam certari that if people in England knew what '.z soil and climate yon possess, they would; knowing you live under the same laws zm themselves, be less backward in coming it) your shores." The Governor was loud), cheered; about 2000 persons presenl. To-day will bo a public holiday. Programme : Processions by day and torchlight, luncheon, and a public ball.
