THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. WEDNESDAY, APRIL 25, 1877.

A feeling of insecurity in regard to the sanitary condition of this Borough, and the absence of anything like preparedness on the part of the Local Board of-Health for the outbreak of any epidemic, has been excited by the report that at least one death which lately occurred in our midst was from some malignant type of fever. We b«ave made enquiries at the office of the

Local Board of Health, but no case of fever or any other infectious disease has been reported either by a medical officer or the Health Officer to the .lionrd. This may re-assure those who have been disturbed by the current rumour, but it would be much more satisfactory to have (the positivo assurance of the medical officer to the Board of Health that no death of recent ofjeurrance has been caused by disease of an infectious character, and we ( draw attention to the matter for the purpose of eliciting such assurance, if _it he possible to give it. Should it unfortunately be the case that an infectious disease has made its appearance in our midst, we desire to remind the Board of "Health that the inhabitants expect at their hands prompt and decisive measures for repressing . the disease. Under the new Health Act we believe it is not incumbent upon a medical officer to report eases of infectious disease, but the Health Officer's duty is clear. We trust that no time will be lost in investigating this mat- y ter and satisfying the*public that there is no ground for alarm, which we assume must be the case when we find that no report has ;: been made by the Health Officer, and that the Local Board of Health are in apparent ignorance of the alarming report which is current.
