WANGANUI.

Sunday.

A man named Moflatt, who was suspected of manufacturing powder and selling it to the natives, was brought from the Upper Wanganui by a number of natives. He was brought before the Resident Magistrate at Wanganui, and committed for trial. The evidence heard generally went to show he had been making large quantities of gunpowder, and in a book found on him there was an entry in his own handwriting to the effect that he had made 2864 pounds .for the Waikatos. One witness named Nott, who had known Moffat for the last five years, said that in April last he saw him at the Upper Watiganui making six tin dishes of powder.. It was of good quality. By the next morning it was taken away, he did not know by whom, but he thought by the Waikatos, who got it instead of the Wauganuis. It was

thought ihat this is the reason the Wan ganuis split on and apprehended him.
