..-.■■ Saturday. The annual agricultural returns for the Thames show the following total number:—Holdings, 584; of which 33 are freeholds, 66 rented, and 6 part freehold and part rented. The extent of land broken up, not under crop, is 585 acres ; in wheat, 3^ acres at an estimated produce of 52 bushels ; in oats, for green food or hay, 82£ acres; for grain, 28f. Estimated produce of grain in bushels, 1273; in hay, 67 acres, estimated to produce 89 tons; in grass broken up, in- I eluding such as hay, 128J; grass sown lands not previously ploughed, including such as hay, 2802|; in potatoes, 93J; estimated tons, 386 ; in other crops, 52J. Total acres under crop, including sown grasses, 4344 J. * : j This day. On arrival of the Taupo, Richard Walters, a passenger, was arrested on a telegram, charged with stealing cheques of the value of £20 at Wellington. A gum digger named John Denison, lying drunk on the Kaipara railway, had his arm cut off by a train. A lad named Campbell Kirkwood Clark, son of a commission agent at Onehunga, picked up a bottle containing brandy in a hedge near an old hut. He died in agony from poison, supposed to strychnine. Arrived : Marmion, from Lyttleton. The Executive of the Grand Lodge; of Good Templars resolved to-day to prepare a monster petition to Parliament in favor of the permissive principle. They also decided to send circulars to J)r. Wallis and E. Graham to ascertain their views on the temperance question.
