The news via Torres Straits from China reTports thousands suffering through famine. The severest privations are at Eiangsee through famine, llice has risen to famine prices. The distress is daily becoming gi eater, the relief being lamentably insufficent. The people are reduced
to the last stage of emaciation and exhaustion, and are dying by thousands daily.
The Satsuma rebellion at Japan is more .serious lhau at first anticipated, but the rebels are dispersed by defeat.
