Sometime between half-past ten o'clock last' night and daylight this morningg a matt. niHod Macdonald came to i^shackins£and sudden death, the circumstances surrounding which are afcpresent shrouded in'mystery. The unfortunate- victim, who has gone by the name of, Macdonald, has been but a short time here, and was ostensibly looking for employment. He stayed at the Pacific Hotel one night, and engaged a bed there last night, but some time later he was at tne-, Qw?'s, Hotel in company with a-wbman,'Wliere^be was supplied, with a glass of,-beer and^wp glasses of whisky in a soda-water bottle* The deceased was an elderjy roan ; of respectable appearance, dresied in grey clothes ; complexion slightly florid, clean shaven, except a grizzly or fair moustache. The' body of the deceased was found lying at the bottom of the cutting at the junction of Eollestonand Mary streets by a milk boy, who- shortly ..afterwards, met Sergeant Mulville and two constables and reported 7th6, circumstance. Sergeant Mulyille at once went and saw the man', and then'l Dr--Payne was called,' and on proceeding- to the spot the body was found as described by the milk boy, quite dead, and with little or no marks of violence risible. /The :spot where the body was found is so dangerous that the deceased, probably came to his death by accident, as being a stranger he couldricatcely. be aware of' the 1 nature of the ground and the cuttings in the locality. Lately several accidents have occurred there, weare informed, but fortunately without serious results.. The deceased is said to have been found at the foot of a cutting newly made, and still incomplete, left by the contractor for filling in the site of the projected new boys' school in. Baillie street, and that there was neither fence nor light to warn pedestrians of their danger.
