Prom the evidence given it appeared that Buchanan received for acting as Clerk of tho Court, Customs Officer, and Postmaster the sum of £120 per year. f books of the Court showed that Jthey fiadbeeix kept in a yerj-curious manner. The jury^returned a verdict of not guilty. Judge Johnston, in discharging Buchanan, took .occasion to refer to the looqe state in which some of the Government' departments are' conducted in country districts. He said it would be well if a stricter" supervision were kept over them,- generally, than appears to be the case at present. His Honor thought this could by done by a periodical visit.of inspection being made by an officer of the Government. Nathan Powell, convicted, of horsfestealing, was sentenced to three years' imprisonment.
