NOTIONS OF ENGLISH WORKMEN.
A deputation of workmen employed in Othse Sheffield steel works recently waited on Mr Gladstone to obtain his advice reSlatiye- to the proposed "removal of the business to New York, which, would, of course, thrp'W' thousands out of employment/'and'catse' their'families to come upon theparish. Amongst other _wild .notion's.."which, they>;entertained' »was a scheme' for preventing the removal of their employers' business, by an appeal to , the"law, ; the .argument being that the i cpnst'ruption 1 of the works at Sheffield i constituted a "contract" with the in- ' habitants, to furnish them with work. Of! course the great statesman kindly pointed ' out their error. The incident illustrates , the marked difference in intelligence between English and American workmen. The latter would hardly need to be told that their -employer can- transfer himself, bag and baggage; td another country if he like". I—Boston1—Boston Globe.
