Thames County Council.
The following is a continuation of the business, transacted, yesterday by the ; Thames County Council. DISCUSSION OF BEPOBT OF PUBLIC WOBKS BOABD (CONTINUED). It was agreed that with regard to the track to Owharoa that the matter be referred to the Public Works.Board with power to expend £30 on it; also that £100 bo set aside for the Paeroa and Waitekauri range track. 0 The remainder of the report was adopted without discussion. , t : ' - FINANCE.^' " i'c »' : The report of the Finance Committee j was read and adopted ; it showed expenditure to the amount.of.£336 3s 6d. SOLICITOBS TO THE COUNCIL.,. .. . Cr Mitchell moved the suspension of standing orders in order to propose that Messrs Macdonald and Miller be appointed as solicitors to the Council. Cr Spencer quite agreed that it was necessary to appoint bplicitors to the
Council, aud seconded Cr Mitchell's motion. Messrs Macdonald and Miller were then appointed. : ;;- .HIIOJTAIA BOAD. Cr Mitchell moved that Crs Brodie, A; J. Thorp and the mover be a committee to meet and confer with the chief Tukukino and the Native owners of land regarding the road from Hikutaia to Paeroa, and report to the next meeting of the Council. The motion was carried. THAMES HOSPITAL ■<.-,--.-- Cr Mitchell's motion that the sum of ,£250 be devoted towards the maintenance of the Thames Hospital was then discussed. *" "'' r" It being pointed out by the Chairman, that under the Financial Arrangements' Act the Government would provide for the maintenance of the Hospital,'„ the motion was withdrawn. mechanic's' institute. Cr Mitchell moved that a grant of £100 be made to the Thames Mechanics' Institute. ~ He suggested that the amount be expended for books only. Mr Spencer seconded the motion.,, ,He thought that a selection of books should be made • treating of agriculture, horticulture, mining, &c. - -- ' „-, \ Cr Thorburn thought that'the Borough Council and the County Council should give £50. : Cr Bagnall could not agree with the vote, but said if it was made contingent on the Borough's contributing an equal sum he would not oppose it. Cr Mitchell thought-they ought not to regard the Borough in the matter, but do their duty without, any reference to them.
