PIAKO.
In company with Mr T. Badford, pitman to the Waio-Karaka Drainage Asso-
ciation,,who in the absence of the mine manager, Mr .Richards, had kindly volunteered to show me through the mine, I visited the workings on the No. 7 level yesterday afternoon. This being the bottorn level of the shaft, it is very wet, ihe water coming out of the face and from the roof like a perfect shower bath. The No. 2 reef is a very promising body of stone, measuring 13 feet from side to side. The two drives—the oue going north and the other going south—are proceeding through tough country. We went up to the face of the southern drive to inspect the lode there, but found .that pwing.Jto the influx of gas from the reef it was difficult to keep the candle alight. Ono of the men informed' me that it is sometimes almost impossible to work in the drives from that cause. The ,crosi-cut which runs from the Grahamstown side of the shaft is proceeding through-solid--sandstone country. The quarts: taken out v . from this is being stacked at the big^ battery, where crushing will be started at no very distant period. ' " /
