The weather is favourable for the races, and the attendance promises tp be very large during the afternoon. The first event was the Hurdle Race of 80 soys; 2 miles and a distance. Eclipse, was scratched; Kildare was the favourite, and won after the second mile, with Banjo who was second; Zetland was a bad third; time, 4 minutes 45| seconds. Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap of 200 soys; one mile and three quarters. All were scratched except Punga, Guy Fawkes, Templeton, and Cloth of Gold. Punga went off with a lead, with Guy Fawkes close up. Cloth of Gold came well to the front at the end of a mile, but soon fell back. Templeton pulled up well towards the finish, but could not catch Guy, "who in the meantime had disposed of Punga, The result was Guy first, Templeton, second, Gloth of Gold third, and Punga last. Time, 3 mins 21^ sees. •
Derby Stakes ; I|* miles: Puriri, 1; Danebury, 2; Hippocampus,3. Betting: 60 to 40 on the field, Hippocampus being favorite. At the end of the half-mile Dead Heat had a strong lead, Puriri second, Danebury third. Puriri soon after passed Dead Heat, and when the mile was completed, was leading several lengths, Danebury put on a spurt .at the distance post, but could not get within two lengths of the winner. Hippocampus was a bad third ; time, 3 mins 53| sees.
Novel Race, of 100 soys; mile and a quarter: Haphazard, 1; Flying Beauty, 2; Merry Bird, 3. The other six were scratched. Haphazard won easily; time, 2 mins 25| sees.
The Hack Race of 20 soys was won by Kathleen.
