OHINEMURI.
, (FROM OUR' OWN CORRESPONDENTS.)
Waitekaubi, March 21.
I can't record any extraordinary, finds in this part of the world, but still there is a wonderful improvement, taking place in the prospects. First and foremost there is the Waitekauri mine in full swing again, and there is no mistake, they are breaking out some splendid stone; on paying the mine a visit this afternoon 1 saw as good a show, of gold in both faces as ever I did in the "No. 2 winze, {and I did not see the/best of it either, as the place was all blackened over with powder smoke. Since the start made with the intermediate levelthis day week only 8 or 10 feet has been driven, but there has been nothing but quartz broken, and that of good quality. No idea can yet be formed as to the size of the lode, as operations were started from the footwall, and the men will require to get some distance,.' in clear of the timbers before they edge off towards the other wall. From present indications the best gold will be found on the hanging-wall side, a3 that side of the
drive is carrying the best now, and did all the way down the winze. In the low level the reef is a large body of stone, but it is not cut into yet to any extent, and if it carries as good gold as the upper portion - of the block I should fancy dividends will soon be-the order of the day. The foot.wall leader, which is some distance from the reef, in the bottom level, is a nice looking lode and carrj'S good gold. The tramway was started at work again .this morning, and a deal of quartz was I'sent to the mill in the course of the day. ! The battery starts full swing next Mon- | day, and I hope there will be no more j stoppages until next Christmas. I Welcome G-.M.Co.—The reef in this | company's ground is a nice body of stone j about 18 inches in- thickness, with gold frequently to be seen therein, and it only wants cheap crushing power, to make this a dividend paying company. . Youwa JNew Zeaia.nl).—The lode lately cut in this ground is a splendid body of gold-bearing stone about 2 feet thick, and from the underlay it has I should' think the Shannon and Fergus Company would have no trouble in picking it jip close to the boundary of the two pieces of ground. The old drive in the Shannon and Ecrgus was too shallow to intersect it, leaving it under foot near the inbttth.
People here are anxiously waiting for to-day's papers, as it is understood the tenders are to be advertised to-day' for. the line of tramway to connect the Welcome mine, with the Waitekauri Company's tramway ; a good many of us have been waiting patiently for that same, and will be overjoyed when tenders are really called for. Several residents here have received notices from the Clerk of the County Council telling them how much their property is valued at, but I think the person who' acted as valuator must have gono about his business in a very haphazard sort of way, or "else he has never: been out here at all and just went to the Warden's Office and got a list of those having business or residence sites, or publicans' licenses', and just' valued accordingly. , . The late wet and wintry weather has driven the,.mosquitoes,.away ; I wish I could say as much for the fleas —this seems to be a perfect paradise for-those lively little animals.
