The libel action, L:.ngton, M.P., against the Age newspaper,, has been heard, and a verdict given for Thomas and Pounds. There are two counts, one reflecting on Lr.agton as a member of Parliament, and tie other as to his business as an auditor
and accountant. On the first the damages were £250, and on the second £750.
A new trial is likely to be applied for in .the Action Ley Ching v. the Australasian, in "which it was stated that a betting Chinaman had not paid up over the last Sprng Meeting. The jury gave damages one shilling, and refused to certify for COStS. -,■-...• ''';''[ ■ -..'I:.
The rain which fell last week has done much good, and has been pretty generel. Tlie Chairman of Committees has referred the Berry case to his solicitors, finding that he got no satisfaction or apology from Berry, for/- calling Lim a corrupt Chair nun of Committees. Sir William Jervis reaches the colonies from Singapore early next month. He receives at the rate of £1,500 a year expenses. Business is duM. There is nothing doing. The elections are beginning to occupy great,. attention. Meetings are held rightly. ...
