Thursday. The successful tenderer for the erection of the Government public offices at Blenheim is John Knight, of Blenheim, the amount being £1013 7s. Other particulars are not yet obtainable. There were 62 births, 24 deaths, and 15 marriages registered in Wellington during February. It is understood that the Eegistrar-General puts the population down at between 16,000 and 17,000, instead of 12,000, as usually supposed. During January and February last year, there were 71 deaths; during corresponding months this year there were 99 deaths.
The Custom House officers appeared in uniform to-day for the first time by order of the Inspector. A shipment of 125,000 white fish ova has been received here from Mechan in good condition. It will be placed in Makerewa pond, Southland. The Government have decided to make extensive additions to the telegraph office. •
Legs cf mutton are selling at Wairarapa at one shilling apiece. The Customs revenue for February is £16,767, as against £18,991 for the corresponding month of 1876. • This day. A return received from the AgentGeneral by last mail shows that the following immigrants were sent to New Zealand from June to December 1876 :— Otago, 1353; Canterbury, 1340; Wellington, 736 ; Westland, 227 ; Taraaaki 114"; Nelson, 104; Marlborough, 96; Auckland, 650; Hawke's Bay, 554—-statue adults; Otago, Canterbury, Wellington, Westlaud, Taranaki and Nelson having an aggregate of . 173 more, and Auckland, Hawke's Bay and Marlborough one hundred fewer than were ordered. Total excess for the whole colony seventy-three.
