The adjourned meeting of the Thames County Council was held today in the Council Chambers at 2 pm. There were present—-Crsßrodie (Chairman) Mitchell, Bagnall, Spencer, Thorburn, Coutts and Thorp. . OVBBDBiIFT. . i A letter/was. read from the Hon. F. Whitaker saying that the Government had no funds to advance, £"5000 as requested. A letter was also read from Mr. W.
i£. Hargreaves of the Bank of New Zealand saying that the Bank would grant an overdraft of £5000 against the rates for 1877. FINANCE COMMITIEE. The report of the Finance Committee was read, received, and adopted, and the accounts passed for payment. The accounts showed expenditure of £237 5s 4d. chaibman's repoet.' The Chairman's report was then discussed.

, TAXATIQN OF NATIVES." £ A The Chairman said- the next wai ;^ matter of great importance, viz.; whether the native population should be taXed.^ He wondered very muclrth&t the matter had not been taken inhandbeTore'foy.their, representatives. He thought that^tfieii^ representatives should" be asked to obtain a vote during next session.
Cr Mitchell thought there were many other things they should turn ; their attention to. A good many men wanted work, and, fortunately for. them, they^ had, money now iwhichjthey hadjt>6i day. He hoped the Council would not rest l satisfied with the small amount already authorised, but would immediately give authority to the Surveyor or" the Chair- ■ man and one or two Councillors to proceed immediately . with ' certaiji|'ji>ork| ? mentioned in the Chairman's report, and in the Ohinemuri distrjcfA rHe\ moved a motion to this effect. He asked that the sum to be spent shouldjiot exceed £500. Cr Brodie deprecated haste in this matter,, and thought jit. better that lithe ,; r matter should be adjourned, fcr a week-.; or a fortnight.
