It is intended to open the railway line through to Lawrence on March the 7th.
The Taieri Board of Conservators waited upon the Commissioner of Customs and urged that the settlers had a claim upon the General Government for assistance, and pointed out the necessity for some legislation to compel the landowners long in the district to pay rates for carrying out the general scheme of prospective works. The Hon. George McLean said he could not promise pecuniary assistance, but he was sure the question irould be carefully considered by the Government.
An alleged case of garrotting took place at a hotel in George-street. Two men bave been Arrested. The Lingards commence a farewell engagement of three nights this evening. Considerable interest is being taken in the forthcoming English cricket match. The local players are busy practising.
A petition is in course of signature in the Dunstan district calling on Mr Vincent Pyke.to resign his seat on the ground that the electors have lost all confidence in his political honesty and integrity.
This day. The Hon. Geo. McLean leaves for Wellington to-morrow. Yesterday he made a distribution of office accommodation. The greater portion of the Provincial Government Builditigs has been allotted to the Supreme and Resident Magistrate's Courts, and Land Departments. The proprietors of the Queen's Theatre have resolved to spend £500 in providing a dress circle.
At a meeting of the Macandrew testimonial committee last night £320 was subscribed by seventeen or eighteen persons then present.
Anderson is" making arrangements for the appearance in Dunedin of Lyster's opera company.
The balance sheet of the Standard Insurance Company for the past six months shows that £28,789 has been received from premiums, and £1227 from interest and transfer fees, making a totalof £30,016. Losses and expenses of management £25 012, leaving a net profit for six months of £5004. The directors recommend that the balance be employed as follows :-— dividend of 9d per share [amount thereof £1875] to be carried to credit of capital accounts remaining, £4014 to remain to credit profit and loss. "Capital would then stand at £33,125, reserve fund as at present £5810, and the available balance £4014-total £42,949, or 17s 2d per share. ..■:
