At a meeting of the Selwyn County Council to-day the question of bringing the permissive clauses of the Counties Act into force was discussed at great length. The motion not to bring them into force was supported by Messrs Holl^ton, Tancred, Fitzroy, M cMillan Matthews, a 2!* D* Turnbull. The motion was carried. The -Hon. J. Hall was the only dissentient. Several valuable trophies are offered for the highest scorer, best bowler, and
the best fielder in the Canterbury team against the English.
The very favourable weather is enabling farmers to get everything secured prior to the return of rain.
Transactions in the grain market are small. Wheat is offering at 2s 6d to 2s 7d ; the latter price for extra superfine free run sprouted grain. Oats, Is lOd to 2s; barley, 3s to 4s ; flour (good quality), £15—forward sales of new have been made at very low rates. Butter, Is; cheese, 6d. Market very unsettled.
