OHINEMURIN

(PEOM OUB OWN COBBESPONKENT.)

Waitekauri, Feb. 15th. •' Having notbing'particular to do yesterday I paid a visit to the Waitekauri battery, where I saw Mr Bleazard busy experimenting with, some tailings, but report says he does not find them payable. One shift of the battery hands has been knocked off, as-it has been decided to work only one shift. The reason given for doing so is that there isn't sufficient quartz; coming to hand for keeping" the mill going. It may be so/ but anybody going through the' .mine and seeing the large body of 'quartz in the block at the Queen end which -is being stoped out would wonder at such a reason being given. I saw a report in Monday's Advertiser purporting" to give some account of the Waitekauri Company's workings. • I don't know whether it was printed for the purpose of misleading shareholders or through sheer ignorance; from which ever cause, it is no credit to the mining reporter of that paper. According to that report the company's reef must be a pretty- tall one if they have driven 70ft and not got to the hanging-wall yet, and carrying the drive from 12 to 16ft.wide. I should say its about as heavy a piece of work a3 any undertaken in this country yet. For the information of your readers I will try to explain the matter. # The No. 2 winze has been sunk a distance of 73ft, and carried down a width of 16ft with no. signs of the hanging-wall. The low level will have to be driven another. 70ft. to bring it under the line of No. 2 winze. The survey of tramway is finished, but I hear the Warden has refused to grant a license for it.unless the Waitekauri Company will reserve a certain number of stamps for the use of the public, which .they veryproperly re.fuse to do.' It is 'a great pity that any obstructions should bo placed in the way of this undertaking, as it is of vital importance to the district, and if not carried .out will throw, the whole place back for an indefinite period of time, as I know of several claims in which work was to have been started as soon as the tram was begun, but, of course, if there is no opportunity of them testing their quartz no work will be done. " '
