THE WEEK.

The week has not been an uneventful one, that is comparing it with the other weeks of the last two or three months, during which it must bo admitted that mining were very dull. In taking a retrospective view, the first item of interest which attracts attention is the re-starting of the Waio-Karaka pump, which event took place yesterday morning. The '■ machinery has now a much-more substantial appearance than it ever bad before,.. several of, the most important pieces of gearing having been ■ replaced by stronger ones, or been- considerably strengthened. The engine 'has also re« ceived an overhaul, and in fao6%very thing has been done that could bo to makeanother breakage impossible. Of course in consequence of the fact that besides the shaft, the drives need io be drained before the No. 6 level flat sheet is- passed', the decreasing of the water will not be appreciably felt for some days, but when the level is passed the reduction will go on much quicker. Perhaps a fortnight, bar accident, will" see the water forked.

During the week nothipg ia the mines has occurred worth noticing, (in consequence of the stoppage of the pump having driven all the men out of the lower levels) with the exception of the yield from the Queen of the May's crushing, which amounted to 4130zs from 468 loads of stuff. It is fair to assume that when this level is better developed, there will be even better yields than the one obtained on Tuesday; as such has been the case in the low levels above. Writing of the Queen of the May it may be added on tribute has been partially successful, the shareholders,: deciding to.permit the directdf^to-lePtkenEhree App'er levels. ; ,.Inthe,Moan*yHri^i»t«ctthc«»ghthings "., cannot be said to be Very bright, yet there is more life shownvthinithere has been for : some-time-past." -The-working-'-of- theI richer pprtioßis jof the Alburnia by t the, | conipaßy^h^^feettf^o^r Highly satisI factory, and a crashing'br rich stun? will ■ soon be at the battery.'- Som<* picked stuff : put -through earlySin'i the" week' realised ! the T handfome... return of rr lßQoza., gold, lit may be ask^, why does not I the , f aad j its ; tribujters T crosh at ! the compaay g" batfery r The reason."is, • that during;the summer montha, there- is . not sufficient water,, available.
