WAIO-KARAKA DRAINAGE.
.' Notwithstanding the great efforts made not only by the contractors, but also by the shaft hands, the contract was not completed by. 12 o'clock last night, which was the end of the contract time. How* ever, at eight. o!clock this mornings all was so far completed as to make * trial start, but the first turn showed . that the alterations to the pumping rod required that the-bob pit should be deepened. This was done, and after some final touches had been given, the pump started and worked splendidly. The pumping shaft, plummer blocks, etc., look so strong that it might be supposed that they would, stand a strain, double that put on them.: 'At nine this morning some of the men knocked off who had been working continuously since eight yesterday morning. The expedition with which this work has been done does credit to all concerned, even though it is slightly-
over contract time.
