At the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning one person. charged with drunkenness preferred forfeiting his bail to appearing in Court. Captain Fraser, R.M , was on the bench. >
■„■ We have to apologise to bur sub-; scribers for the delay in the publica-i tion of the Star on Saturday evening. Just as we were commencing to print the inside :pages a .portion of the machine gave way, causing a delay of some duration, and ultimately the forms were removed to the office of our contemporary, the proprietor; of which placed his machine at pur disposal, which courtesy is hereby thankfully acknowledged.
We have received from Mr J. H. Jefferson the January number of the Australasian Sketcher. The ordinary meeting of the members of the Board "of Education was held in Auckland on Friday last, and from the Herald's report we extract the following items : ~-t Goldfields — The Chairman said that he had been interviewed by gentlemen from the Thames district relative to the expenditure of the grant of £14,000 about to be obtained from Government. On the motion of Mr Luckie, it was resolved "That the question of the best way of allocating the whole or such part of the £14,00 3 as shall be obtained from the^ Government be referred to the Building Committee.—Kauaeban ga.—The alleged irregularity in the election of the School Committee was referred to. a Select Committee.—Similar complaints from other localities were referred to "the same committee.—Mr Mason's appointment as assistant teacher was confirmed," and it was resolved to advertise for a head-master.
So much abuse, says Wellington Post, has been heaped on the Government steamers Hinemoa and Stella that it is only fair to,note any points in their favor. This we have done already as regards the Stella, and we now find that the Hinemoa has travelled 2200 miles during the past month, at an-average speed of lOknois, and with a consumption of coal/at the rate of only a ton to every 22 miles run. The Luna would have burnt 2| tons during the same time. In fact she used to burn nearly one-third more coal for the same distance and speed than the Hinemoa and; Stella together.; : v•: ,~. ■;
