TAIRUA.

(from a correspondent.)

Nevesville, January 28,

Being one of the great unemployed I thought I would take a trip to prospect the country, as the Inspector of Mines has re entered the whole of the unworked leases. ■ In my rambles I paid a visit to the

Golden Arrow. —'In this mine I find about 100 tons ready for crushing. Since Christmas about 40 tons have been taken but from the lower level with good prospects. . From several trials I made I should think the quartz ought to go about 1| ounces to the ton. It's a great pity that this mine should be at a stand-still for want of conveyance of the rock to the mill. ' ' *

Prospectors.—The light of other days has faded. A few months ago there were about 40 hands employed, and every signs of this claim going ahead. The appearaDce at present is that all hands have not yet. returned from their Christmas holidays. If this property has turned out a failure, it is no reason that Tairua as a gold-eld should fail. Ajax.—The driving on the reef in the lower level is still continued with encouraging prospects —various trial crushings have.given very encouraging returns, The manager is pushing the works ahead with all the energy and economy that his staff of six. hands will permit. In a week's time I shall be able to give you an idea of the future prospects of this mine. Mr Ehrenfried lately paid a visit to this mine.

Consolation.—A party has been at work for the last ten weeks sluicing, but not being able to save the fine gold has had to succumb for want of cash. I hear that another party is out working one of the oldleases, and is doing satisfactorily.^ I decline for various reasons from giving the locality oftheir workings.
