The contest for the vacant seat for Napier is becoming exciting. Four candidates are in the field, namely, Messrs Buchanan, Rhodes, Sutton and Tiffen. Two have addressed the electors at most of the centres in the district, and one has been well received at his meeting in Napier. The salient feature was a speech by Mr Sheehan replying to Mr Sutton, who had listened. The party of,, which Mr Sheehan is at the head, and who are termed ." repudiation office '' to " pickpockets." Mr Sheehan retorted that if so his party suited the circumstances, according to the principle "set a thief to catch a thief." Mr Buchanan addressed a; crowded meeting in Napier last night. The principal theme was land transactionsj and the attitude in the present contest of the repudiation office and those who hold the lands got from natives.
