Some time ago we published a calogram from England intimat/.ig that henceforth degrees conferred by the University of
New Zealand would be recognised as Academic distinctions, and confer the same rank on those who obtained them as if they had obtained them in some University of the United Kingdom. This telegram is now explained by a dispatch from theSecretaryof State published in the New Zealand Gazette of January 11th. Under cover of a dispatch to the Governor a charter, under the Queen's sign manual, is forwarded, which expreasly states the body corporate established by " The New Zealand University Act, 1870," has been reconstituted, and declared to be a University, &c, with power to grant degrees. The degrees thus granted, for the sake of encouraging " a regular and liberal cause of learning," are to be recognised as if granted by any British university, and are entitled to the same privileges. The whole Charter seems worded in a manner very favorable to the interests of the New Zealand University, and very likely the additional privileges and distinctions which a New Zealand University Degree will now confer, will induce more young men to enter as undergraduates.
