THE ENGLISH CRICKET MATCH.

Mr Bennett, the agent of the All England Eleven, arrived by the Taranaki to-day. This gentleman is as much surprised as any one at the departure of the cricketers from Sydney by the Tararua, and is at present unable to explain why his arrangements, as given in our columns three days ago, hare been altered. He informs us that he telegraphed to Mel* ! bourne on the 9th inst., telling the agent there that it was absolutely necessary the team should come-direct to Auckland in the Eotorua. Mr Mills, the manager of the Union Steamship Company, had promised to arrange for the Itotorua to leave Sydney early on the 24th, so that she might depend upon getting into the Manukau by the afternoon o£ the 28th. The agent in Melbourne telegraphed back, " All right; team will leave by Rotorua." When Mr Bennett saw the telegram saying the team were to leave Sydney on Wednesday he concluded it meant Wednesday week, and was thunderstruck to see yesterday's cablegram that they had left by the Tararua. Until Lilly white and his men arrive at Hokitika, it is impossible to say what the latest arrangements are, but Mr Bennett considers it nearly certain that they will come straight on to Auckland, in which case he will try to get the match played on the 30th, 31st, and Ist February. Mr Bennett wishes uf to state that the team will not play dni Kegatta Day, and if he can get them to patronise the flagship he will.—Star. ':
