COUNTY EXTRAVAGANCE.
(To the Editor of the Evening Star.) Sib, —I was surprised to read in your report of County proceedings a motion by Mr Mitchell, " that the Chairman bo requested to take a flying survey in company with the surveyor." lamat a loss to know what a competent surveyor like the one appointed wants with a chairman on such occasion. Is he to be guided in his recommendations • by the hypothetic conelusions of the Chairman, or to act as guide to that worthy while enjoying a tour of his newly acquired dominion at the expense of confiding ratepayers;? I maintain that the surveyor should go through the County unfettered, and give his unbiassed report on works necessary in the various ridings, but should he require local information the local representatives ought by reason of residence and general acquaintance with the wants of their respective districts to be the proper persons from whom to obtain the same. In conclusion, when I first read theresolution I thought your printer's devil must have made an error, thinking it impossible that Mr Mitchell could bring forward such a motion of extravagance. however, referred to the 'Tiser, and found the same word in print. I assumed that the devil had misread copy, and substituted chairman for chainman.—l am, &c, Eeflex. P.S.—ls there any show for another trip to Wellington on County" business ?
