A tangi for Sir Donald McLean is to be held, and a large gathering of natives will take place on Wednesday next- to hold a formal lamentation for Sir Donald. The gathering will include most of the principle chiefs of the district, and be held in the paddock adjoining Sir Donald's late residence. Large supplies of food are to be collected, and most of the natives come armed for the purpose of firing those volleys which are honors paid only to a tino rangatira, or principal chief. The principal movers in the matter are Kapepo and Tareha.
At the' Magistrate's Court to-day a petition by Mr Sutton, against the return of Colonel Whitmore for the Clive riding of the Hawkers Bay county, was opened. The petition was on the grounds of the improper reception of plural votes and the rejection of the votes df persons who were not on the only assessment list the returning officer was able to procure, which was for the Clive road board district, while for the Te Matata and Pakawhai districts he had no assessment lists, and he rejected all votes from those districts, though within the riding, refusing to. consider them as outlying districts. Mr Beetham reserved judgment till next Monday.
