The Presbyterian Synod devoted? the whole of yesterday's sitting, extending over eight hours, to. the discussion of the question of instrumental music, which came up on a petition from the Oainaru

Presbytery, praying the Synod to rooind its decision of last year on the subject, »nd to send down an overture.to the Presbyteries and kirk sessions. The ultimate decision of the Synod was a reso ution, on the motion of the Eev. Mr Finlayson, declining to accede to the ac-. tion of the Oamaru Presbytery, and declaring that no express, definite command is claimed for the use of instrumental music in Christian worship, nor is such music to be regarded as an essential part of worship, but is merely permitted as an aid in sustaining the voices of the congregation while engaged in the service of praise.
