Waiotahi School Committee.

The meeting to elect a Waiotahi School Committee for the present year, was held yesterday in the Thames school-room. Only five householders were present at the commencement of the meeting. Mr Srodie was called to the chair, and having read the advertisement calling the meeting, called upon Mr Davies to read the report which was adopted. It w»ft as follows:— .

" The chairman of the 'vVaiotahi School Committee has great pleasure in reporting on the favorable progress made during the last year in the various schoolsin this district, they having all steadily increased in numbers, although the schools were for a time closed during the prevalence of scarlet fever; and also on the cordial and good feeling which existed among the several members of the Committee in their endeavor to fovrard the education of the youths of tlfe Thames. "During the year the Board of Education, anxious to push forward the pupil teachers in passing their examinations, allowed a sum of fifty pounds per annum |-* v to an experienced instructor, and it is to be regretted that the sum was divided, £2o per annum being inadequate to the successful carrying out of this object. " The number of the children on the roll,in this district is 668, which number is steadily increasing. " The committee at a meeting of the whole, and also of air the teachers (who were unanimous on the subject), substituted a general treat to the children in the Tararu Gardens in lieu of prizes at the breaking, up for the Christmas holidays, which completely removed the jealousy which existed in former years, and seemed to give general satisfaction, the amount collected for the same being £41. fJ he Committee in retiring would

suggest a general conference of the new Committees as soon ss possible iti reference to - the fair division of the £4000 granted for new school buildings. "In c inclusion the Committee beg to tender their thinks to the Board of Education for the" support and attention paid to their requisitions, and the promptness with which all commuriications were answered, and sincerely hope: that the new 'Committee about to be chosen this day will be able to report ns favorably at the termination of the present year.

"W. Davies,

"Ch&irman Waioiahi School Committee. "January 12th, 1877." Mr Da vies said that as a member of Committee he would like to express the great obligations they were under to Mr Gudgeon for his services during the past year as secretary. Though mention of them didnot appear in the report, it had been recorded in the minute book. .

On the motion of the Chairman a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr Davies and the outgoing committee. i The following gentlemen were then nominated to act as members of committee^ for the current year:—-Messrs Davies, Gudgeon, Denby, Kneebone, Richards, Patterson, Ferguson, Sawjer. Mr Kneebone retired, and Messrs JKobinson and Mulligan being appointed scrutineers, and the Chairman having explained that the roting would be cumulative * poll was taken. The result was us under:—Mr Davies, 11 votes; Mr Gudgeon, 4; Mr Richards, 4; Mr Ferguson, 4; Mr Sawyer, 4; Mr Patterson, 3; Mr Denby, 0.
