THE WEEK.

The duloess in mining caused by the Christmas holidays has not yet worn off. At Ohinemuri, however, things are assuming a brighter aspect than they have done for some months past; At Owharoa no little activity is caused by the starting of Perry's battery, fifteen head bein^ employed by the Smile of Fortune and Morning Light claims, ten for the one and five for the other. There is considerable interest displayed as to the results, and it is generally expected that they will be fair ones. The shareholders of the Nut intend to re-enter their ground as soon as they can make arrangements for crushing. The Waio Karaka district is again contributing to the gold returns. The Queen of the May intends to start crushing next week at Bull's. It will be remembered that the. upper levels of this mine, proving unremuneraiive, were not entirely worked out. It is thought that it might pay tributers to work tbese levels, and a movement is now on foot to let them on tribute, an extraordinary meeting being called to consider the matter. The City of London is now exciting some attention. In the low level the drives have been extended to the Queen of Beauty boundary, and as the latter mine has obtained fine yields from these lodes, there is no doubt but that the City will soon be in a position to crush and obtain similar, returns. At the Moanatairi battery the repairs are completed, but crushing will not be started till next week. '
