Cr Bagnall then proposed that Crs Mitchell, Tborburn, and the mover be a committee to bring up a report on this subject at the next meeting on Tuesday • next. Cr Mitchell seconded the motion, which was carried, and the Chairman was empowered to lay the correspondence before the next conference meeting of Borough aud County Councillors. SALARY OF CHAIRMAN. Cr Spencer said there was a subject the consideration of which they should delay no longer, that was the question of the Chairman's salary. Cr Brodie here vacated th,e chair, and Cr Mitchell was. called upon to take it.

Cr Spencer continued by proposing that the salary of the Cl'airman be £200 per annum.

The Chairmau said he had also wished to pr©pose a motion on the subject, but Cr Spencer had anticipated him. He had only this to add to what Cr Spencer had said, and that was that as the chairman would hare important duties to per*

form he would prefer seeing the salary £300. He would have liked to discuss the question before a chairman had been appointed.

Cr Spencer agreed with Cr Mitchell that the salary was a small one, but it was as much as they could afford to give at the present time, and for his own part he believed that Mr Brodie would work just as hard if he got nothing at all. Cr Bagnall thought that £200 was as much as they could give, at all events for the first year. The Mayor of Auckland got £250 a year, the Mayor of the Thames only £150, and he thought they would be acting fairly by fixing the salary at £200 a year.

The Chairman said he hoped they would herea/ter be in a position to grant £500 a year to their chairman. Cr Spencer's motion was then seconded by Cr Thorp, and carried. The question of the chairman's travelling expenses was then entered on, and these were fixed at a guinea a day, when the chairman was travelling on County business by direction of the Council. Cr Brodie was then recalled, and Cr Mitchell resigned his position and informed him what had been done in his absence. ; ■ . : ,? i r

Cr Brodie thanked the meeting, and it wris then resolved that the meeting be adjourned until Tuesday night.
