Thursday,
A serious accident occurred this morn-' ing near the Southern Cemetery, where excavations are being carried on by means of prison labor. There were about 35 ! men present, and a shot was put in at the I top of the cliff about 50 feet high. The I men were then removed to a distance of 1 100 yards. Part of the shower fell upon i the group of prisoners and labourers, knocking four of them down. One prisoner had his leg broken and another was rendered insensible from a severe wound on the back of his head. The others were not much injured. Another accident occurred at the same place during the afternoon; by which a prisoner had the flesh stripped off the bone of his leg for several inches. Mr Henry Driver received a telegram I to-day, stating that, at Messrs Robertson Brothers' sale of shorthorn cattle held at Victoria on the sth instant, 190 head brought £20,000; forty head were, pedigree cattle, the remainder being from I the general herd.
