Presentation to Mr Charles Ahier.
. After the usual weekly practice of'the' Grahamstown Fire Brigade, last night, the members mustered at the Hall for the purpose of presenting an address (to which we referred yesterday) to Mr Charles Ahier, who, uutil a few weeks ago, had been the secretary of the Brigade for four years. There was a very fair muster, but it, was noticed that not more than half of them had on uniforms. • Mr J. Wright, in making the presentation, said it was a very pleasurable duty. Their late secretary had been an active member of the Brigade for four years and three months. He • then referred in glowing terms to Mr Ah^er's business .qualities and the straightforwardness with which' he carried out the business of the Brigade, and read the address, as follows:—" To Mr Cbarles Ahier: De s ar sir,—The members of the Grahamstown Volunteer Fire Brigade desire to express: their thanks for the able manner in which you have discharged the duties of secretary to the brigade, and trust that you will still continue to give the brigade your assistance and attendance as often as convenient. With every wish for your future welfare we remain, yours truly, G., Pbice, Superintendent; J. Weight, Captain; Geo. Basham, Secretary." In reply* Mr Ahier said: Superintend dent, officers andme'mbersof the Grahamstown Fire Brigade, you will excuse me ' for making a short speech in return-' ing thanks for the handsome address you, have presented me with. I have not attended to my duties as regularly as I could have wished during the last eight or nine months, as other duties kept me away. In the early days of the Brigade I attended every meeting and every practice, and now, although I cannot be an active member, I hope you will allow me to wear my uniform (which I shall always be proud of) and to continue an honorary member of the Brigade. (Applause). After some business of a routine character had been transacted the meeting broke up.
