QUEEN OF THE MAY.
On Sa£#rd,ay wo contracts for driving from the low-leveji .crqss-put—the one east and the other west—were Jet to Trcvarthen and party, 9s per foot bejng the price of the eastern drive, and I,os per foojt the western one. Work was started this morning by tbe contractors, and jt is expected that they will have so far extended the drives by next week that crushing will be started. The reef looks much the same as it did in the level above, but of course no idea of its gold-bearing qualities can be formed until it has had several
day's run at'the battery. As a rule the shareholders have the greatest faith in the mine, and if the quartz from the new level is even as good, and some give reasons why it should be better, as that from the old one many weeks will not elapse before another dividend is to hand. The hoppers at the mine are full of stuff from the old level, but as it would only keep the battery going for two or three days at the .outside it is no use commencing crushing at present.
