The time for the conference of Borough and County Councillors has been altered. Instead of being held on Monday as previously notified, it will not be held until Wednesday at 3 o'clock in the afternoon. Mb John Leydon held a cattle sale today in the allotment adjoining his auction mart. The cattle were in good condition and fetched good prices. John Pike, who was committed for trial for larceny on Thursday last, was taken to Auckland to-day in charge of Constable Wigmore. He was accompanied by Mrs McDonnell. We notice that the new steamer T.e Aroha will leave Grahamstown on Saturday next at 5 p.m. for Paeroa and return on the following Monday, and if sufficient inducement is held forth the steam launches La Buona Ventura and Fairy will prolong the journey from Paeroa, starting on Sunday morning and returning the same evening for spots from which to view the now celebrated " Broomhall selections," &c. The excursionists must deposit passage money before Thursday, and if the excursion does not take place, the money will be returned and the excursion postponed for a fortnight. There was exhibited in Mr Grigg's window to-day, a handsome oil painting by Mr H. Driver, painter, Pollen street. It is called " The search for the bodies," and represents the gunboat of the Naval Brigade searching for the bodies of Messrs Gribble, Polkinghorne and WiJliamson, the victims of the late boat accident. The place is a point between Tararu and Puru, and having seen the spot we are able to vouch for the exactness of the picture. Mr Driver has several fine paintings of local scenery that are well worthy of inspection, and which, we understand, he intends to dispose of by Art TTnion at no very distant period. We would draw attention to the notice published by us yesterday regarding the proceedings in bankruptcy of Mr Edward Johns. The advertisement, as far as the dates were concerned, was wrong, owing to the fault of our reader. It should have been that the meeting of creditors had been adjourned from the 19th December, 1876^ to 9th January, 1877. The meeting of creditors is to take place at Messrs Brassey and Brassey's office at noon on the last named day. The following letter from R. B. Lusk, Beceiver of the Education Rates, appears in yesterday's Herald :—" Sir, —;I learn that people have, not unnaturally, understood a statement in the Herald of Tuesday, relative to School Committees and Education Rates, as meaning that the non-householder's rate was so abolished as that the rate for last year cannot be enforced. To save much trouble, and it may be not a little expense, be so good as to call the attention of your readers to the true state of the matter, namely, that all the education rates payable for last year must be paid, and that, unless paid before the end of next week, summonses will be issued against all defaulters." Te Wananga, the Maori newspaper, which has always been strongly opposed to Sir Donald McLean and his policy, had the following in a recent issue:—We deeply regret to hear that Sir Donald McLean's health has not improved since his arrival in Napier. It has become necessary to bring him into Napier from his station at Maraekakaho. Our fight against Sir Donald has been one of a political uature, tinged perhaps with some un. avoidable bitterness, but we still can feel a genuine sympathy for his bodily health, and hope that it will not be in vain to wish him at this season "many happy New Years. 1' '
