The conference of the members of the Borough and County Councils has been fixed for Monday next. The first meeting of the County Council will be held in the Grahamstown Court House on Tuesday nest.

We are sorry to hear that Dr Payne, who has been' ailing for some time past, has lately become so much worse that he had to proceed yesterday to Auckland with a friend, so as to be under the im-mediate-care of Dr Kenderdine.

The prizes won at the late Tararu race meeting were paid to the winners at the Commercial Hotel last night. All present expressed themselves well pleased at the way in which the sports had been conducted.

Me J, Leydon held a sale of cattle yesterday, at the section adjoining his auction mart. There was a good attendance of buyers, and satisfactory prices were realised.

We have received from Mr Jefferson, Pollen street, the Australasian Sketcher for December 23. It contains portraits of the All-England Cricketers, and a number of well executed engravings, besides a colored supplement entitled " A game of euchre." With the Australasian of December 23 is published an Almanac.

We are requested by Mr Bennett, acting captain of the Naval Rowing Club, to say that the X'epresentative crew from hereforthe intwprovincial regatta for 1877 at Nelson, will be glad to pull against any other crew of Thames men during the present week, for a sum of money as may be agreed upon. The Naval crew leave here on Monday next, and pull in three events.

Thb commencement of the elections of school committees for the present year will be held tomorrow at the time and place advertised for that of electing a committee for the Kauaeranga school district. The notice given by Mr Ren*

Shaw, chairman of school commissioners, was published on the nineteenth of December, and the notice that such election would take place by the secretary to the Central Board ofiKducation on the 23rd of December. The question may be raised as to which is ihe proper person to give the notice, as, if the latter is, then the proper space of time, fourteen days, did not intervene between the notice and the election, which would consequently be informal.

The following story is told by " Atticus,'' in the Melbourne Leader: —" A clergyman's daughter, a little miss of 10, was reading a newspaper case in which a woman complained that a man refused to make her an honest woman. .' How could he make her an honest woman, papa?' she inquired. 'By marrying her, my dear,' said her father, taking away the paper. That evening some parishioners were taking tea at the parsonage, and the conversation—as is not unusual at tea-tables — turned on matrimony. The little girl, to air the knowledge she had acquired in the morning, turned to her mother, and asked aloud, 'Mamma, how long ago is it since papa made an honest woman of you?' blie has not since been allowed to sit at table when there are visitors in the evening."
