RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT

THIS DAY.

(Before H. Goldsmith and E. W. Puckey, Esqs;, J's.P.) LUNACY. Sarah Donnelly was charged on suipicion of being of unsound mind at Thames, on the Ist inst. The defendant was committed to the Lunatic Asylum on the certificate of Dr. Perston and another.

LABCENY. John Pike, on warrant, was charged that on or about Dec. 2nd, 1876, at Thames he did feloniously steal, take and carry away from the dwelling of .Roderick McDonnell, one pair trowsers, one shirt, one pocket handkerchief, one portmanteau, one sewing machine, one iron, one sugar basin, one cream ewer, one butter dish, two kerosene lamps, one cruet stand, two salt spoons, three egg spoons, three forks, six knives, and one table cover, the whole of the value of £7, and the property of Roderick McDonnell. Mr Miller appeared for the informant, and Mr Campbell for the accused. Mr Miller applied for an adjournment to enable his client to get up the evidence. The defendant was on bail and an adjourn* ment of a few days would not matter much. Mr Bullen was absent at the present time. , Mr Campbell said that his client had his bail in Auckland and there might be a^ifficultj in getting it enlarged. He thought it would be well to take the j evidence of the prosecutor, and perhaps after hearing that the Bench might think it proper to dismiss the case. The Bench decided to adjourn the case till Thursday, when Sub-Inspector Bullen, who is absent, shall have returned and the witnesses obtained. Bail was allowed, one surety of £100 and two of £50 each.
