Kauwaeranga Girls' School Examination.
The nomination for W anganui is fixed for January 3rd and polling on the seventh. -
The scholars of the above school were examined yesterday in the presence of the local committee. Previous to the examination the school room had been tastefully decorated with flowers,, ferns, etc., by Mr Field, head master of the Kauwaeranga Boys' School, assisted by a corps of-school boys.
Amongst those present we noticed Messrs Grigg, Souter, and Macnab, of the school committee; Rev. V. Lush, Bey. J. Crump, Hey. J. T. Hinton; Messrs Pevern, Bagnall, Renshaw, Hudson, and Cox.
Mr Grigg, the secretary of. the school committee, who was called to the chair, opened the proceedings by a brief address to the scholars..
Then followed a recitation entitled "The song of the wind," which was rendered in a creditable manner by Miss A. Joynt, and next a song, sung by the school under the leadership of the chairman, who had kindly acted as singing master, attending the school twice a week for that purpose. The prizes for reading, composition, and needlework were adjudged by the visitors, five gentlemen from those present acting as judges of the reading and the compositions, and needleword being handed round amongst those assembled. The prizes were then distributed as follows:— First Class.—First prize, good conduct, Mary Ann Haskell; second, good conduct, and first attendance, Priscilla Greenville; reward for good conduct, Minnie Robinson; ditto, Emily Ashman ; ditto, Mary Jane Daykin; ditto, Kate Whitaker; diligence in study, Sophia Kenshaw. Examination prizes—Geography, Mary Harris ; grammar, Grace Bloomfield ; arithmetic, Grace Bloomfield; English history, Sophia Renshaw ; spelling, Priscilla Greenville; general proficiency, Ruth Lovatt. Prizes to "be decided by committee :—• Reading, Millie Fisher; writing, Annie Lovatt; composition, Sophia Renshaw ; needlework, Sophia Renshaw and others ; recitation, Annie Joynt. Second Class.—Good conduct, Percy O'Brien; diligence in "study, Eva Outridge ; good conduct and regular attendance-, Emma Stevens ; general improvement, Mary McQuillan ; improvement in writing, Emma Skudder, Theresa . In addition to the gifts on the Christmas Tree each child received a bag filled with cakes and sweetmeats. , .. <>T , An interesting feature of the day's proceedings was a presentation to Mr J. Grigg, hon. sec. to (and one of) the Kauaeranga School Gommiitee. -It consisted of a handsome rosewood inkstand, and was presented by a committee of the senior girls as a mark oi appreciation of; Mr. Grigg's gratuitous services.!.!ll teaching singing in the school. Thelpresentation was acknowledged in suitable terms by the recipient, Mr Grigg, to whom, we may remark, much of the success of yesterday's proceedings was due, especially for his exertions in procuring the numerous prizes presented. ; . This terminated the proceedings. .
