Novel Wager.—A novel cricket match came off on the Bishop Auckland Cricket ground, last week. Mr Miles Brown, an innkeeper, staked £20 to £10 that Mr W. Piers, an auctioneer, could not bowl him out in twelve hours, Brown finding his own bat, and Piers his own ball. The novelty of the match drew together an immense quantity of people. Brown produced his bat, which, was made for the special occasion; it was 10 inches wide, exactly the width and height of the wicket. Piers had a potshare ball weighing 27 ounces, same as used in bowling matches. Play commenced at 10.15 a.m., Brown placing his bat firmly in front, completely obscuring the wicket. Piers commenced bowling with his ponderous ball with such effect that in a short time the bat was beginning to show signs of being splintered. At length, by some accident, Brown left one stump uncovered, and the ball coming/straight, brought down the stumps, the bowler accomplishing his task in 91 minutes.-r-Nework Advertiser.
