RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT
j THIS DAY. (Before "W. Fraser, Esq., R,M.) TRANSFER OF LICENSE. An application was made for transfer of the license of the Occidental Hotel, Grahamstown, from Wm. Swindell to Alfred Kitto. As no objection was made the application was granted. - . BREACHES OF THE BOROUGH BYE-LAWS. ■ John Blackmoor was charged with allowing his horse to wander at large in Pollen street, in contravention of the above. Fined 2s 6d. Eliza Jane Laughlin was charged with the same offence, only that, in her case, it was a wandering goat. She failed to appear. Sergeant Elliott deposed that the goat was released by a boy named Butler, and Mrs McLaughlin had sent up her little girl to pay the fine, which was allowed. ■ Fined 2s. John Hendy, for allowing his horse to stray in Pollen street, was fined 2s 6d. Rapana, also on account of the wandering proclivities of his, quadruped, was similarly charged. He was represented by his son, who was also mulcted in the usual penalty, 2s 6d. Robert JJolleston was charged with neglecting to keep a light burning over the principal door of the Hape Hotel, Shortland, on the 3rd instant. Defendant stated that it was a defect of the lamp. He was fined 2s Os, and cautioned not to appear again on a similar charge. AN EXPLANATION. Before the closing of the Court Mr | Macdonald asked permission to make a statement by way of explanation, relative | to the erroneous report appearing in this morning's Advertiser of the case Townsend v. Gudgeon, in which he had appeared as mediator between the parties. Mr Macdonald was understood to say that the plaintiff and defendant had, through him, come to an understanding by which each was satisfied that their different conceptions of the affair had arisen from no intentional untruthfulness, and that the case had entirely arisen from a misapprehension.
